This presentation focuses on a post card collection owned by Willard E. Jones of Ahoskie, N.C. Mr. Jones has been collecting post cards with special North Carolina significance for over 20 years. We are grateful to him for his kindness in allowing us to share this special sampling with our visitors to North Carolina's Outer Banks.
Enjoy this unique glimpse at the past. Although actively traded and highly valued by collectors, we doubt if many of these have been available for public display in years.
This post card is dated 1920 and depicts ocean front cottages in Nags Head. Notice the lack of sand dunes betweeen the cottages and the ocean. President Roosevelt's WPA workforce created the duneline for over 100 miles of North Carolina's barrier islands with little more than shovels. This photo pre-dates the WPA which was established during the Great Depression (the 1930s).
